Nearly concurrent with the timeline of covid-19, a novel plant disease called ToBRFV was discovered to be infecting and killing tomato plants in Israel.
It quickly spread throughout the Middle East, and by 2020 had gone global.

Like covid-19, ToBRFV spreads mostly indoors in large commercial greenhouses, where many of the world tomatoes are grown—particularly those sold in grocery stores.
It didn’t take long for agricultural authorities to see the danger ToBRFV posed to the global tomato industry.

With Covid-19 demanding most of the world’s attention, the National Seed Health System had to find a way to prevent ToBRFV from wiping out the global tomato supply.
